National Chiropractic Month

Well, since it is National Chiropractic Month, it seems like a great time to talk about what Chiropractic really is and how it works. In a nutshell, when you are being formed in your mother’s womb, the spine starts as a pole that extends to become the brain and spinal cord. From that, the 31 pairs of spinal nerves extend outward and the rest of the organs and structures are then developed. The brain, spinal cord and nerves are what makes up the Central Nervous System. The nerves turn on organs, send messages up our spine to our brain and back out to the body and are responsible for our sensation and our movement. Pretty amazing, right?

Chiropractic is an art, philosophy and a science. The founder of Chiropractic, D.D. Palmer said that there were three things that kept the body from perfect balance. Those three things are: thoughts, toxins and traumas. So, we start out all healthy with no disruptions to our spine and then we have a lifetime of different external sources that influence our health and especially the spine. The birth process alone can disturb that balance and put stress on the structures. If we pinch a nerve, it cannot get the optimal flow to the organs. There have been autopsy studies to prove that each spinal nerve goes to a specific organ and part of the body. You can find the nerve chart in any anatomy textbook.

This is why Chiropractic is so amazing. Just like D.D. Palmer said, we know that our thoughts (stress), toxins (chemicals and environmental stressors) and traumas (learning to walk, sports, poor mechanics, accidents, wear and tear, etc.) all take away that perfect balance. We are all in need of Chiropractic because we all use our bodies all of the time. When the spine gets adjusted and put into proper alignment, the body can maintain its most ideal health. We will all develop arthritic changes at some point and those changes can be accelerated with poor mechanics and poor alignment but chiropractic can slow down the development of those arthritic changes.

Your Chiropractor will remove the interference to your nervous system when they adjust you and put your body in the proper alignment and then that Central Nervous System can work much better as it was originally designed to. Chiropractic is a wellness approach. Thomas Edison said, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease. I love that quote. We maintenance our teeth, we maintenance our cars, but we can live without both of those things. We don’t have to wait until we are in pain to see the chiropractor. When people have disc issues, pain from arthritis, sprain/strains, muscle spasm and so on, we can help by calming the nervous system down through various therapies and chiropractic combined.

It is much easier to maintain your body than to suffer with pain, discomfort and have to revamp it all over again or look at possible surgeries. We have one life and we want to help you feel the best you can possibly feel and that means being healthy and thriving! Our spine is a huge component for ideal health in order for the signals to get out to the body through the spine. That is why we became Chiropractors. We really enjoy taking care of our patients and being a part of their health journey! At Cox Chiropractic, your wellness is our passion! Have a great day!
